Fast-growing fields include computer programming, health care, and business administration. As the economy recovers, companies tend to hire technical staff first. An associates degree can save you time and money, by transferring later to a regular 4-year degree program. Further, many varied careers are available to people who hold associates degrees. Although most jobs which pay six-figure salaries require a college degree, technical fields offer high salaries based more on ability and specific skill-sets. The greatest downside to an associates degree in the job market is that you will be competing with individuals holding bachelors degrees. Therefore, make sure you're comfortable in the niche you've chosen, and have developed strong job skills.

In order to become an RN (Registered Nurse), a bachelors degree in nursing is recommended. RN's command a greater salary, and are responsible for an enlarged scope of practice over LPNs and CNAs. Students will receive classroom instruction and clinical training in a hospital setting. A 4-year BSN program allows students to further specialize in the areas of pediatrics, geriatrics and mental health. After completing your nursing education, you must be licensed by the state in which you'll be practicing, given that state boards of nursing each have specific certification requirements.
